Confession #118 – I am a sucker for mini food. And anything that gets baked into a mason jar. I mean, food is already life, but cute food? I don’t stand a chance.
The options for using mason jars as a baking vessel are endless on Pinterest. I’m obsessed. And not only does it add to the cuteness factor, measuring your food in jars before baking saves a million (ok, two) steps in the food prep process. Your meal is portable, portioned and ready to go straight from the oven!
I’m a huge fan of baked oatmeal, and I have been dreaming about trying a mason jar version. I have been using these little mason jars for overnight oats, but I have to say, I love the extra sweetness you get from the baked fruit in this version. My kiddos love it, too!
And they are super easy to make. My daughter knows the recipe by heart already and loves to help me make these on a Sunday. We often will double to recipe because these go quick in our house.
Right now I have tons of berries from our local farms in my fridge and freezer, but you can use whatever fruit combination you love. I have some rhubarb to use up, so I am going to do a cherry rhubarb combo this week. This would also be delicious with summer peaches or apples and pumpkin spice this fall. Get creative!
In the end, just scoop 1/2 cup of the oat mixture into your mason jars and bake uncovered for about 20 minutes or until the oats start to get slightly golden and the fruit is soft and bubbly. If you don’t want to use mason jars, just get some oven safe ramekins or Pyrex bowls to make this in – anything goes!
To heat, add a splash of water or almond milk and warm in the microwave for a minute or so. These will last 3-5 days in the fridge, so one day of prep and your cute little breakfast is ready all week!
Enjoy, friends!

I make double batch of these every week now. I love them with peaches and I don’t mix them in with the oatmeal. I use frozen and just put them in bottom of jar before I add oatmeal

Such a yummy idea, Donna!

I made these for me. Trying to balance 13 hr shifts and healthy eating is hard. I love these! So does my 7 yr old. I had to make double the batch 2 days later 🤣.
Thank you for the recipe.

Help! I only have steel cut oats (which I’ve never used before)! I’ve been trying to figure out how to adapt this recipe to use the steel cut oats rather than rolled oats,. Have you by chance made this with steel cut oats or do you know what changes I should make?
PS- I’m trying to get organized to start the 21 Day Fix this week! Thank you for all the resources you provide!
Nancylynn says
I haven’t tried – I am sorry!
Christie says
Would I be able to make these and then freeze them? If so, how long would I need to reheat them for? Thanks for all your wonderful recipes!
Stacey says
I wondered the same thing. This week’s meal plan has this recipe for all 5 days, but one batch only makes 4, so I would want to do 2 and freeze the rest. I would probably use the 8 x 8 pan for doing that, though.
Nancylynn says
Yes! You can definitely freeze these and then thaw in the fridge or heat in the oven or microwave from frozen!
Amanda Roberts says
I don’t really want to buy jars or anything like that. Wondering what serving size would be in this instance and if I could just bake in a casserole dish?
Nancylynn says
You could mix it all up and bake in a casserole! Just divide your pan into 4 servings!
Mary says
Oh. My. YUM!!! I’m not always an oatmeal person – it’s a texture thing – but these are perfect!!! Even heated in the microwave! Just the right amount of sweet and perfect fruit flavor. Definitely a new favorite!
Nancylynn says
That is amazing, Mary!!! Thank you for letting me know!!
Abbigail says
I’ve tried many recipes for jar oatmeal’s and this one just blew me out of the water! It is so good, it’s hard to not eat more than one jar!
Nancylynn says
Right? Addicting!!
Kristin says
Would dried or dehydrated fruit work or is fresh or frozen the best way to go?
Nancylynn says
You could do any type of fruit that you like! It will all work great!
RL Johnson says
PLEASE DONT DO THIS!!
Per Ball/Kerr the Maker of the jars baking in them without certain precautions is Very dangerous – and there have been cases of glass literally exploding in the oven
here’s what the say and they are VERY explicit about the only safe way to do it.
PER BALL/KERR –“Bake in a water bath. Mason jars are meant to be used in hot water baths or pressure canners and can’t be placed in a dry oven without a water bath. Place Mason jars in a tall-sided roasting pan or baking dish and fill pan or dish with hot water.” http://www.countryliving.com/food-drinks/advice/a43870/can-you-bake-in-mason-jars/
PLEASE STAY SAFE OUT THERE..
Nancylynn says
I have never had an issue with this and there are tons of similar recipes out there; however, if anyone is concerned, they can use pyrex ramekins instead as I indicated.
Carol Danna Kinney says
Anchor Hocking makes jars that are oven safe.
Nancylynn says

Nancylynn says
yup!
Melanie says
Best oatmeal i’ve ever had! Love these – will definitely become a staple
Nancylynn says
YES!!! This makes me so happy!!
Jessica says
Would it be okay to omit the fruit? Not a fan of cooked fruit, would rather use fresh after reheating but wasn’t sure if the oatmeal would cook up the same without the juices from the fruit?
Nancylynn says
It should bake fine this way!
Laura says
So frozen berries are ok? Do I need to let them thaw first?
These look delicious can’t wait to try it!
Nancylynn says
They should be fine! You can put them in frozen!
